Responsible Bankroll Management

A bankroll is money you have decided in advance you can afford to lose entirely. Stake a fixed small percentage of it — commonly 1% to 2% per bet — so that a normal losing run cannot end your ability to keep betting or affect anything else in your life.
Define the bankroll first
The bankroll is a fixed, separate amount — not your current account balance and not money with a job elsewhere. Deciding the figure before you bet is what makes every later decision a maths problem rather than an emotional one.
Flat staking beats everything else
One unit per bet, where a unit is 1% to 2% of the bankroll, is the simplest workable system. It removes the two most damaging instincts in betting: staking more after losses to recover, and staking more after wins out of confidence.
Variable staking based on confidence sounds sophisticated but usually just amplifies the bets you are most emotionally attached to. If you want a principled variable system, use fractional Kelly at a quarter or less, and only if you actually have measured edges.
| Run length | Roughly how likely |
|---|---|
| 5 losses in a row | Near certain |
| 8 losses in a row | Very likely |
| 10 losses in a row | About even |
| 12 losses in a row | Uncommon but expected eventually |
Plan the drawdown, not the profit
Long losing runs are normal, not a sign something has gone wrong. At 1% stakes, a ten-bet losing run costs 10% of the bankroll and is survivable. At 10% stakes, the same run is close to fatal. The stake size decides whether variance is an inconvenience or the end of the exercise.
Set limits while you are calm
- A deposit limit per week or month, set in your bookmaker account.
- A time limit per session.
- A stop-loss: a point at which you stop for the month, decided in advance.
- No betting to recover losses, ever. That is the single most expensive habit.
Limits set inside your bookmaker account work better than intentions, because they still apply when you are tilted.
When it stops being entertainment
If you are betting money you need, hiding it from people close to you, chasing losses, or feeling anxious rather than entertained, the maths on this site is not the issue. Support is free, confidential and available immediately.
